Dear families:
Starting this September, Ontario schools will be required to follow the Ministry of Education’s new Provincial Code of Conduct to support learning and reduce distractions. This will mean some important changes in our school regarding the use of personal mobile devices and social media.
Mobile Devices:
All members of the school community, including staff, students, and community members, will not be permitted to use personal mobile devices (i.e., cellphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.) during instructional time.
In grades 7-8, students’ personal mobile devices will need to be stored with screens out of view and powered off or set to silent mode during instructional time.
For Grade 6 and below, students’ personal mobile devices must be stored with screens out of view and powered off or set to silent mode throughout the full instructional day.
The only exceptions that will allow for the use of mobile devices are the following circumstances:
· for educational purposes, as directed by an educator
· for health and medical purposes
· to support special education needs
Going forward, report cards may include information on classroom distractions, such as using personal mobile devices.

Social Media:
Also, starting this September, school boards across Ontario will be required to restrict access to social media platforms on school networks and school devices.
School board and school communication with parents/guardians and the public through social media will still be allowed.

We ask for your support by encouraging you to discuss these changes with your child(ren) before the start of the school year to promote awareness, understanding, and responsible digital citizenship in creating a positive school climate.
